On this website you will find news and information about the Landscape-of-the-Year (LoY) initiative of International Friends of Nature (IFN) and the Romanian Nature Friends, aiming at a sustainable development of Danube delta.

Now, what do we understand by sustainable development? To say it in a few words: To use the rich nature and culture of the region in a way that conserves its biodiversity and creates local income. And – being the delta a natural and cultural unity – to strengthen the cross-border cooperation between the Romanian and Ukrainian part.

Almost exactly one year ago, on 3rd June 2007, the Landscape of the Year (LoY) 2007-2009 was officially opened with a Fish & Culture festival in Tulcea. Already before and since then various projects and activities have been realised or started, focussing on LoY’s main topics:
•    Sustainable tourism strategies (including capacity building and promotion)
•    Environmental education & awareness raising
•    Sustainable use of natural resources (especially reed)
•    Cross-border activities

This website is thought as a communication portal in English, Romanian and (so far only partly) Russian language with a double function:
•    providing information on projects and measures, contacts, links and downloads to everybody interested
•    serving as an internal exchange platform for the LoY project group (that includes representatives of the regional authorities as well as NGOs) during the LoY’s duration.

It is definitely meant to become an open platform – even beyond the LoY’s official duration, offering the chance to report on any initiative and activity that contributes to the project’s basic goal: to promote the region’s sustainable development.

This initiative aims at bringing people and ideas together. So, please, feel invited to contact us and use this media!

But, please, be aware that this website is still in the initial phase. We are working continuously to complete the contents. Meanwhile and in the future you will find detailed (background) information in English, German and French language also on the IFN-site  www.landscapoftheyear.net/danubedelta.
